Exclusion Limits on a Scalar Decaying to Photons and Distinguishing Its Production Mechanisms

چکیده

LHC run-II has a great potential to search for new resonances in the diphoton channel. Latest 13 TeVdata already put stringent limits on the cross sections in the diphoton channel assuming the resonance is produced through the gluon-gluon fusion. Many beyond the Standard Model (SM) theories predict TeV-scale scalars, which copiously decay to diphotons. Apart from the gluon-gluon fusion production, these scalars can also be dominantly produced in other ways too at the LHC, namely, through the quark-quark fusion or the gauge boson fusions like the photon-photon, photon-Z, WW, or ZZ fusions. In this paper we use an effective field theory approach where a heavy scalar can be produced in various ways and recast the latest ATLAS diphoton resonance search to put model-independent limits on its mass and effective couplings to the SM particles. If a new scalar is discovered at the LHC, it would be very important to identify its production mechanism in order to probe the nature of the underlying theory. We show that combining various kinematic variables in a multivariate analysis can be very powerful to distinguish different production mechanisms from one another.

Search for Structure in the Bsπ Invariant Mass Spectrum

s p 1⁄4 7 and 8 TeV. No significant excess is found, and upper limits are set on the production rate of the claimed Xð5568Þ state within the LHCb acceptance. Upper limits are also set as a function of the mass and width of a possible exotic meson decaying to the Bsπ final state. The same limits also apply to a possible exotic meson decaying through the chain B 0 s π , B 0 s → Bsγ where the phot...

Effects of R Parity Breaking in the Higgs Sector

In analysing the supersymmetric theories one usually assumes the conservation of a discrete symmetry, called R parity, distinguishing matter fields from their superpartners. The R parity violation could lead to phenomenologically interesting effects, such as mixing of gauginos with leptons and Higgs bosons with sleptons (and hence breaking of the lepton number), non-zero neutrino masses and the...

Search for Higgs decays to tau lepton pairs at the Tevatron

We present a search for neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons decaying to ττ pairs produced in pp̄ collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV. The data have been collected with the CDF II and D0 detectors at the Tevatron collider at Fermilab (1 fb of integrated luminosity per experiment). No significant excess above the standard model backgrounds is observed. We set exclusion limits on the Higgs production cros...

Primordial nucleosynthesis with a decaying tau neutrino.

A comprehensive study of the effect of an unstable tau neutrino on primordial nucleosynthesis is presented. The standard code for nucleosynthesis is modified to allow for a massive decaying tau neutrino whose daughter products include neutrinos, photons, e pairs, and/or noninteracting (sterile) daughter products. Tau-neutrino decays influence primordial nucleosynthesis in three distinct ways: (...

Search for particles decaying into Zγ at D 0

Results on the search for particles decaying into Zγ(→ llγ) are presented. Using roughly 1 fb of data, dileptonplus-photon invariant mass distributions have been examined for an excess over the theoretical predictions. Having observed a good agreement between data and the standard model prediction we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction (σ ×B) of the resonance...
